Darjeeling is the most important and organized hill resort of Indian state of West Bengal. Darjeeling lies 686 kms from the plains of Kolkata perched at a height of 2134 meters with a backdrop of the mighty snow clad Himalayan Peaks. One can get a clear view of the world’s third mightiest and highest mountainous snow peaks, Kanchenjunga, from the town on a sunny day. During the British Raj in India, Darjeeling's temperate climate led to its development as a hill station (hill town) for British residents to escape the heat of the plains during the summers, becoming known as the Summer Capital. Darjeeling is internationally famous for its tea industry and the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The population's ethnic composition is closely linked with that of Nepal, Bhutan and Sikkim. The majority of the populace is of ethnic Nepali background.
